Abstract | A sampling of plots in two medieval streets, Aldgate and Marketgate (present-day Scale Lane and Lowgate), provided evidence of constrasting development. In Scale Lane a plot interpreted from documentary sources to have been the capital messuage of a Hull merchant, Joh Skayl, was found to have been built upon for the first time in the late 13th century. After structural alterations to the timber frame in the first half of the 14th century the building was demolished. In Lowgate the initial development of the plot held in the tenancy of the Taverner family appears to have been later than in Scale Lane. Here, structural occupation appears to have been virtually unbroken until 1968, the building undergoing developments on several occasions throughout this extended period. |
