Abstract | Sydney Smith (1771-1845) was an essayist and wit. He was born in Woodford Essex, educated at New College, Oxford and lived in Edinburgh and London before moving to Yorkshire in 1809 to become rector of Foston. He campaigned in favour of Catholic emancipation. He moved to the living of Combe Florey near Taunton in 1828. He contributed to the Edinburgh Review for 25 years and wrote numerous essays and sermons. |
