The earliest surviving record is 1818, but the circuit may have started in 1799. Records prior to the Methodist Union of 1932 are those of the Wesleyan circuit, which was thereafter called the Howden, Hailgate circuit In 1934 this amalgamated with the Howden, St John circuit to form the Howden circuit (for records see EMG/127-135) except for those churches in the list below marked which joined the Market Weighton circuit (for records see MRM) and those marked which joined the Selby circuit
