Datec.1941-late 20th century
DescriptionContains photocopied typed copy correspondence, photographs and notes.
AdminHistoryThe correspondence between Kathleen Hines of Bridlington and Marjorie Mair of Detroit, Michigan documents the wartime project to arrange pen-friends involving English and American children. The letters themselves date from 1941 and 1948. The subject matters are wide-ranging and they provide a comparison between life and attitudes in Bridlington during the war against those of middle class America. The copybooks were used to write the original letters to Marjorie Mair and these are located in section DDX979/2. Kathleen Hines was a member of the Women's Voluntary Reserves and was centre organiser from 1947-1948. She also spent some time in Berlin during the postwar period. Photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to this are located at DDX979/3.
