Description
Describes the early treatment of the mentally ill and the need for properly managed asylums. Includes information about the foundation of an asylum at York in 1777 and an investigation into its subsequent bad management. Shows how local authorities looked to private asylums as an alternative to the expense of building public asylums. Used as the basis for a chapter in 'The Private Lunatic Asylums of the East Riding' published by the East Yorkshire Local History Society in 1976.
