Two letters are from Howard Horsley's elder brother, David, who was at the time teaching in another part of Sierra Leone on the opposite side of Africa. There is also a letter postmarked 'Rumuruti' from a man called Peter Moller who is mentioned in the National Archives under Harry Peter Moller, who it is believed went to East Africa before the First World War. He may have been the person to drive the first car ever to arrive in Nairobi, which was owned by Lord Delamere the leader of the 'White Settler' movement and the most powerful citizen in the colony. As a young man Peter took delivery of the car for Delamere in Mombasa and drove it all the way to Nairobi building bridges or rafts for river crossings on the way. He owned a cattle farm and supported the aspirations of the local Africans. Howard Horsley met him through his time as a teacher.
The letters include information of Howard's climbing exploits across East Africa which include the Aberdares, Mt Kenya and the Rwenzori as well as a trip to try and locate the Mountain Gorillas some 5 years before David Attenborough. He also mentions safaris and learning to fly. |
