AdminHistory | Adlingfleet Drainage Act was passed in 1767 after several landowners contacted the civil engineer John Smeaton to draw up proposals for a drainage scheme. The Act authorised drainage commissioners to be appointed and John Grundy junior, Smeaton's colleague, was appointed engineer. David Buffery was the resident engineer and Charles Tate was the land surveyor. The contract to excavate the main drain was awarded to James Pinkerton and John Dyson, these two men went on to work together on Driffield Navigation.
Robert Plewes was the Goole Rural District Council Surveyor in the early to mid-20th century. His father was also called Robert Plewes and employed as a surveyor. The similarity in names has made it difficult to work out which Robert Plewes was responsible for acquiring these records before they were donated. The son of Robert Plewes senior was also a Mayor of Goole. He worked for more than 40 years as a local government officer before retiring in 1958 as a surveyor to Goole Rural District Council. He received his early training in surveying from his father who was surveyor to the Council before the First World War.
Frank Dominick was an American who married the sister of Mrs Buckingham who was the daughter of Robert Plewes. Frank Dominick was interested in American naval development and submitted various articles for publication. |
