Born in Beverley in 1842 daughter of George Smedley. Emigrated with the family c.1852. Taught school at Morris Illinois, married Francis Law of Spalding Lincolnshire who had emigrated to Canada in 1851 and had moved to Illinois where he met Emma. Ran a team of Mules on the Illinois Canal and later ran an hotel and bar. The family later took up residence in Guelph, Canada
