AdminHistory | In 1585, John Mason lodged a Bill of Complaint regarding his grievance that the local Lord of the Manor, Hebblethwaite, had begun to encroach upon common land in the Norton and Welham area, despite having no jurisdiction over Mr Mason or other tenants. Mr Mason claimed that these common lands were the property of the Queen and therefore they were subject to rules governing the Queen’s manor. Hebblethwaite contested this claim, however, a ruling was made in John Mason’s favour and the matter was thus settled. |
