| Description | Compiled by William Pakenham whilst as a midshipman. It covers his time on board HMS Minotaur, HMS Monarch, HMS Raleigh and HMS Cruiser. It gives a detailed daily account of life on board ship and each day gives the 'Courses', wind direction, barometer reading, bearing and distance and 'Remarks'. Under 'Remarks' can be found any encounters with other vessels and the duties expected of a midshipman such as cleaning the ship, trimming sails and making and mending clothes. Also included are some very fine paintings and sketches and he charts his journey along the Mediterranean sea. Also includes diagrams of instruments used in sea-faring such as Massey's Patent Log and Massey's Sounding Machine and a cross-section of a 12 inch 25 ton gun and a diagram showing the HMS Raleigh 'Hoisting her banjo frame and screw'. |
