Stitched letters (7) from 'Freddy' [Cavendish-Bentinck] to Lady Jessica Sykes
Date
nd
Description
First of the series is on headed paper ('The Royal Dragoons') and was writtent to 'Jessie' from 'Sunnyside West End Aldershot'. It concerns Freddy's proposal of marriage to 'A.A.' and his subsequent decision not to marry her. The second appears to be partial but also refers to Freddy's proposed marriage to 'Mrs A' and his attempts to free himself of the obligation. He asks Jessie to help him by writing to 'Mrs A'. The third refers to letters sent to Mrs A and acknowledges his 'shabby' behaviour (although he appears to be reprimanding Jessie for not keeping silent about the matter. Freddy also refers to Jessica's 'affairs' which he hopes 'are looking better'. The next letter appears to be partial and again refers to his feelings regarding the proposal. The fifth letter makes it clear that Jessica has corresponded with 'Mrs A' and Freddy now asks her to forward on his letters to Jessica concerning the matter in order to reveal what a 'penitent scoundrel' he is. The final letter mentions the rough draft of a letter to Mrs A that Freddy has posted to Jessie for her comments.
