182) Wylies' Racket from the Manor Road side looking to the York Road. The wall on the left enclosed land behind James Elwell's woodcarving shop, and also marked the line of the old Beverley town ditch. 1985
183) Excavation of the old town ditch on Wylies Road which turned out to be much older than originally thought 1985. The town never had walls, but was encircled by the ditch (which ran into the Walker Beck round the corner). The town gates, The Bar, Hengate and Keldgate Bar, ensured that one got into the town to sell goods without paying toll.
