| AdminHistory | The Hildyards are an ancient family of Saxon origin, with the name of 'Hildyard' being derived from the Saxon word for noble or generous. The first recorded family member on the pedigree is Sir Robert Hildyard the elder in 1157.
The Winestead Estate was acquired by the Hildyards in 1431 when it was inherited by Isabel, wife of Robert Hildyard V of Scalby and daughter of Sir Robert Hilton of Swine. The first baronet was Sir Robert Hildyard who was born in 1612 as the second son of Sir Christopher Hildyard III. He acquired property at Gembling and Weaverthorpe and married Lady Mountfort in 1634, she was heiress to Alderman Thackray of Hull. She had married twice previously, firstly to Thomas Ferries, former Mayor of Hull, and secondly to Sir Edward Mountfort of Bescote, Staffordshire. In 1638 Sir Robert was living at South Frodingham and bought the lease of Crown lands in Patrington from his elder brother. It was for his support of Charles I during the Civil War that he received the baronetcy.
Sir Robert's eldest son was Christopher Hildyard (1640-1685) who married in 1667 Esther Dobson, heiress of William Dobson of Hull. From this marriage came further estates including the Manor of Flinton, property in Dairycoates, Myton and Leeds, the last of these was formerly owned by William Dobson's father-in-law Alderman Richard Sykes, who was an ancestor of the Sykes family of Sledmere. Christopher died in 1685, before his father, and the baronetcy went to Christopher's son Sir Robert Hildyard (1667-1729). In 1704 Esther Hildyard purchased the advowson of Rowley, living there in a newly built rectory with her second son William who died in 1715. Esther died shortly afterwards in 1716.
The 2nd baronet died without issue in 1729 and so the son of William Hildyard, rector of Rowley deceased, became Sir Robert Hildyard 3rd baronet. The marriage of his mother Nancy Croft to William had brought further estates in Arram, this was through the Thompson family of Kirby Hall on Nancy's mother's side. Nancy's brother was John Croft who founded the famous drinks company 'Croft's Port' in Oporto, Portugal. In 1738 the 3rd baronet married Maria Catherine, daughter and heiress of Henry d'Arcy of Sedbury who also owned estates at Colburn.
In 1758 the Ings and the East and West Fields at Winestead were enclosed. Nine years later Sir Robert bought 281 acres at Newton Garth, near Hedon, and in 1774 he also bought South Frodingham and a further 362 acres adjacent to Winestead. He died in 1781 and in his will entailed all 3035 acres of the family estate. Sir Robert D'Arcy Hildyard became the 4th baronet and brought with him the estates at Sedbury and Colburn.
Following Sir Robert D'Arcy Hildyard's death in 1814 the line of Hildyard baronets died out. His heiress Anne Catharine Whyte married Colonel Thomas Blackborne Thoroton of Flintham, he assumed the surname Hildyard as a result of the marriage in 1815. The entail on the estate was broken in 1842 when Anne's eldest son Thomas Blackborne Thoroton Hildyard came of age. The Winestead Estate was sold in 1885 due to financial pressures and the Screveton Estate in Nottinghamshire was sold in 1918. Flintham Hall has however remained in possession of the Hildyard family to the present day.
