DescriptionIncludes references to having arrived in Hull; having carried 104 men from Hull and put them on board the Surprize, a twenty gun ship Capt[ain] Richard Night; he being an old ship mate he promoted several young men that had been mates of ships, that Ryder had carried from Hull that had no friends, he at Ryder's request made them midshipmen; people of Hull asking him to be careful of the men that he had on board, believing some to have been involved in the affair of Capt[ain] Smelt, which caused some concern to Capt[ain] Jelfe; presuming Grimston had the olives; his brother officer having about ten shillings a day for pressing but Ryder has not had asingle sixpence allowed over his pay, though he has done his duty going up the river for two days and nights with twelve men at a time and not a farthing allowed for him or his men but what he was obliged to give them and being greatly obliged to Grimston for his great favour
