TitleLetter to John Grimston at Kilnwicke from Hen[r]y Hewgill at Smeaton
Date29 Apr 1756
DescriptionIncludes references to a jaunt to Newmarket; the planting of willows, the season being too far advanced to cut or plant more; the improvement it will make until next Spring; having enquired of Rob[er]t Kelsey what he remembers of the cottage but his memory is gone and the building of it is not within the memory of anyone now alive; Grimston losing nothing by the death of Phillips, Kelsey being some years older than he was; expecting to see Richardson next week; writing to the Bishop about the out rent paid to him from Birkby and Smeaton, the present steward refusing to allow the Land tax in proportion to the out Rent, which they have a right to, by Act of Parliament; having receipts to show for many years; not having paid this year for himself or Grimston and refusing unless the Land Tax is allowed in full; having been told that they will allow one half but looks at a compromise as ridiculous; expecting to be written to at any moment; Grimston's rent being £3.9.0 and Hewgill's £1.5.0 yearly; hearing that Grimston's little boy is well and hoping he had the cruel Distemper well over which had driven him from Kilnwicke; presuming that Grimston has sent his mare to a horse near home but if not and she is sent into his neighbourhood he has spoken to Phillips to take care of her and recommends [Slouch] son of old Cade as the fittest horse he knows within five miles and his price being £1.1
