AdminHistory | The Boynton family is an ancient one. Bartholomew de Boynton, who is the first one mentioned in the family pedigree, died in possession of the manor of Boynton and from this the family originated. Bartholomew de Boynton was alive in 1067. The family seems to have acquired the manor of Barmston, their ancient seat in the East Riding, through the marriage of Henry Boynton esquire. Sir Matthew Boynton was the first baronet, created in May 1618, and he served in parliament for the Borough of Hedon in the reign of Charles I. He married Frances Griffith who was the daughter of Sir Henry Griffith of Burton Agnes, knight and baronet. This marriage meant that the manor and estates of Burton were acquired by the Boynton family. Sir Griffith Boynton, the third Baronet, lived there in 1725. |
