AdminHistory | Harold Garside (1894-1967) began to collect local history records relating to Goole and its surrounding area following his demobilisation after service in the First World War. He was a founder member of the Goole branch of the Historical Association, which began in 1936, and for 25 years he was its chairman. Harold Garside presented his collection of local history sources to the town in Jul 1964 and this became the foundation of the local history collection that was named after him. The Garside collection includes Harold Garside's own manuscripts, items collected by him and some records that were added to the collection when it was displayed at the old library premises in Carlisle Street, Goole. Following local government reorganisation in 1974 Humberside County Council took over responsibility for Goole Museum and the manuscript material was divided between Goole Local Studies Library and Goole Museum. |
CustodialHistory | This collection was received via Goole Local Studies Library, the original Garside collection having been divided between the Library and Goole Museum which is now managed by the East Riding Museums Service. The previous reference numbers used by Goole Local Studies Library and the Garside Collection numbers used by the Museums Service have been included in each catalogue entry where they were apparent on the original records. Information about items in the Garside Collection held at Goole Museum can be obtained by contacting the East Riding Museums Service. |
