Title'Survey of Sir J Constable Estate in Holder. 1575 & copies of deeds of Halsham' RETURNED TO DEPOSITOR
Date14th century-1578
DescriptionIn this volume, which probably dates from the latter part of the 17th century, are bound two early works both written on parchment. The first of these, the illuminated survey of the Holderness estate, consists of 28 pages measuring approximately 8½ ins. × 11¾ ins. Pages 27 - 28 have clearly (from the stain on them) been bound out of order, and the gap between Pages 26 and 27 would accommodate four more pages - making 32 in all. Perhaps this is the explanation for "ps. xxxii" (pages 32 ?) on Page 1. It is significant that, in the first entry on Page 7, Richard Bylton appears to pay at the "forsaid feasts", when none have previously been mentioned. On Page 1 is an illuminated border in a floral design, and the Constable shield of arms appears twice, at the top end at the bottom of the page, the one at the top also shewing the helm, crest, crest wreath and mantling. Page 6 is mainly occupied by the scene of the Crucifixion; and the first capital T on Page 11 is illuminated. A haloed female figure kneels before a crucifix on the left, and on the right an angel descends, reaching down with both hands to raise a king from flames. The date given on the spine of the complete volume is 1575, but the date on Page 1 of the survey - unfortunately it is damaged - looks more like 1578. A complete transcript is given of this below.
The second work in the volume is a cartulary relating mainly to Halsham, but also including a number of deeds relating to Burton Constable and Newton, copied onto 44 pages measuring approximately 11¼ ins. × 15¼ ins. The latest deed copied into it is dated 26th April 1487, and the cartulary would seem to date from the late 15th century - possibly about 1500. It has been calendared.
