AdminHistory | The Beverley and Barmston Drainage Commissioners were created under the terms of the Beverley and Barmston Drainage Acts 1798 and 1880.
The 1798 'Act for draining, preserving and improving the Low Grounds and Carrs lying the the several Parishes, Lordships, Townships, Hamlets, Precincts, and territories of Beverley, Saint John of Beverley, Grovehill, Sandholme, Storkhill, Molescroft, Leckonfield, Arram, Scorborough, Lockington, Ayke, Beswick, Wilfholme, Kilnwick, Watton, Hutton Cranswick, Rotsea, Featherholme, Skerne, Brigham, Fisholme, Nafferton, Lowthorpe, Harpham, Little Kelk, Foston, Burton Agnes, Gransmoor, Lisset, Barmston, Ulram otherwise Owram [Ulrome], Skipsea, Dringhoe, Beeford, North Frodingham, Brandesburton, Moor Town, Leven, Emmotland, Hempholme, Goodhill House and Struncheon Hill all in the East Riding of the County of York' created a body of Commissioners elected by proprietors and gave them powers to construct drains for the purposes of carrying water from the low ground in the drainage district to the River Hull. Separate Commissioners were appointed by the 'Hull End' proprietors and 'Sea End' proprietors.
The 1798 Drainage Act was amended by the Beverley and Barmston Drainage Act 1880. Under this Act a newly constituted body of Commissioners was created. The 1880 Act also gave the Commissioners power to dredge part of the River Hull.
The functions of the Beverley and Barmston Drainage Commissioners were taken over by the River Hull Catchment Board in 1941 |
